PennDoT provides tips to avoid motor vehicle accidents

Winters in Pennsylvania make driving difficult, especially in Western PA where steep hills and windy bends are the norm. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently released its series of annual tips to help local drivers make it across the state's soon-to-be-snowy roads without suffering a major motor vehicle accident.

Some of these tips are obvious, especially the most important suggestion, which is to closely watch your speed. If you drive too fast in snowy conditions, the odds dramatically increase that you will be involved in a serious motor vehicle accident. And, as you know, it takes longer to stop your vehicle when you're traveling on snowy and icy roads. Driving too fast only reduces the amount of time you have before colliding with a stopped vehicle in front of you or another driver who may be changing lanes, etc.

PennDoT also suggests that motorists have their vehicles checked by a certified mechanic when winter hits. This is especially important for your vehicle's brakes. Having a mechanic inspect your vehicle will ensure that your brakes, belts, and tires are prepared for the harsh driving conditions with which we have become so accustomed here in Pittsburgh and around the tri-state area. No one enjoys taking their vehicles to the shop, but it can help you to avoid any unpleasant surprises when you're out driving on the road.

PennDoT also advises drivers to always check the condition of roads before they take off for their daily commutes to work, school, the grocery store, etc. During particularly bad snow storms, some Pennsylvania roads are simply un-drivable and others become clogged with accidents. To avoid danger, it's important to have an alternative route planned out that can get you where you need to go.

Accidents this winter are inevitable, but by taking certain precautions and having a well-thought out plan of action for treacherous mornings, you can exponentially reduce your chances of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. If you have questions about motor vehicle accidents or were injured because of the actions of another driver, call the motor vehicle accidents lawyers at Dugan & Associates today at 412-922-0800 for a free consultation.
