Are you being exposed to toxins at work?

As many workers in Pennsylvania know, some jobs come with far more dangers than others. However, some of the hazards connected with your line of work might not be immediately apparent. Something that is often overlooked is the presence of toxic materials in some workplaces. Overexposure to these substances can cause serious illnesses and dramatically reduce your quality of life.

Under law, your employer is obliged to make you aware of toxins that you may be exposed to as part of your job. This may come in the form of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This document should set out how the materials should be handled, their toxicity, the harm they can cause and the procedures for dealing with leaks or spills. You should also be provided with the relevant safety equipment to protect you from such materials.

As this article on workplace illness explains, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself and the people you work with. Be aware of the hazards around you and report any concerns immediately. If you suspect that you have been exposed to a toxin, seek out medical attention as soon as possible.

It is a worrying subject and many of these illnesses can have long-term negative effects on your health. You may even find yourself unable to work while you recover, placing a significant financial strain on you and your family. Fortunately, you might be entitled to workers' compensation. An attorney can advise you about your options and may be able to assist you with pursuing the remuneration you deserve.
