More consideration needed of mental health compensation claims

Many workers in Pennsylvania know how distressing and inconvenient it can be to be injured at work. The time needed for your recovery, coupled with medical expenses and lost wages can make life extremely difficult, especially when you are already hindered by your injury. If you develop an illness at work, things can be just as hard and it could take a long time for the symptoms of your illness to clear completely.

Fortunately, if your job causes illness or injury to you as a result of you carrying out the responsibilities of your position, you may be entitled to workers' compensation. However, unfortunately some illnesses can fall by the wayside. This is particularly the case with mental health issues like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Employees in many sectors, particularly members of the police force and fire service, can be exposed to highly distressing situations on a regular basis. However, the effect that this can have on these individuals is often overlooked and it can be hard for them to get the support and compensation they deserve. In Connecticut, a new bill has been passed to allow police officers to apply for compensation for PTSD, but only in cases where it has been caused by specific events.

While this is a step forward, there is still a long way to go as there are many workers throughout the U.S. who could benefit greatly from the support a successful claim could give them, and Pennsylvania is no exception. If you are suffering from a physical or mental illness caused by your job, an attorney may be able to provide valuable advice and guidance as you make your claim.
