Disease and injuries often spike during and after storms

Natural disasters occur throughout the country, including Pennsylvania. Storms that have recently hit the east coast are an example of catastrophes caused by nature. The storm killed people, and the disaster may cause additional harm to area residents. Workers who provided help in the aftermath of the tornado may face occupational diseases and injuries caused by the cold or toxins released by the storms.

Other storms, like tornadoes, can also cause injuries. Asbestos poisoning is a serious injury that spikes when storms occur. Asbestos is a durable material that used to be an integral part of construction materials before the world knew about the toxicity of the substance. Many structures built before 1970 contain asbestos.

A tornado or another catastrophe can tear apart old buildings, causing particles of asbestos to fly through the air. First responders and other employees who are helping with the recovery efforts then breathe in the toxic substances.

Asbestos is the primary cause of a lethal type of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Particles of asbestos are tiny and can embed in the linings of the lungs. The particles cause scarring that may later lead to asbestos-related illnesses, including mesothelioma.

Employees and other people who risk exposure to asbestos, lead or other toxic substances should use all available precautions. Defensive working equipment can help mitigate the effects of asbestos on workers. Protective equipment that employees may find helpful includes rubber gloves and respirators.

Employees who believe that their working environment caused their lung disease or other illness may want to consult an experienced workers' compensation attorney. A lawyer may be able to discuss the potential cause of the illness with the employee. Possible avenues for an employee with lung disease or other illnesses may include submitting a workers' compensation claim, requesting disability benefits or filing a potential lawsuit. If you have suffered injuries because of asbestos poisoning, please call the injury attorneys at Dugan & Associates today for a free consultation at 888-99-DUGAN.
