Fatal workplace accident under investigation

Certain occupations or work-related tasks require that additional safety measures are in place in order to ensure employee safety. Despite these measures, however, workers in Pennsylvania and across the country continue to experience injuries at work. Unfortunately, investigators in another state are working to fully understand a recent fatal workplace accident.

The accident reportedly happened at a construction site one morning on a day in early April. A 73-year-old man was using a front-end loader to move heavy equipment at a work site. Although another employee was directing him, neither of them reportedly saw two workers standing nearby. Unfortunately, the operator of the front-end loader allegedly lowered a set of wheels and a large tire onto them.

Both victims, ages 23 and 55, were transported to the hospital by helicopter. Unfortunately, the younger man has since passed away as a result of his injuries. The second victim remains in critical condition. The sheriff's office is currently investigating the incident, but the Occupational Safety and Health Administration typically investigates fatal accidents such as this as well.

As a result of this fatal workplace accident, a family is now coping with the unexpected loss of a family member. In addition to coming to terms with their grief, they will also have to cope with additional expenses due to funeral and medical costs in addition to stress that may be felt due to loss of wages. Additionally, the injured man may face a long road to recovery and may never be able to return to work in the same capacity. Although the victims -- including the surviving family members of the deceased man -- are likely entitled to workers' compensation insurance benefits, they may be unaware of their rights or how to secure appropriate compensation. Many people in Pennsylvania who have found themselves in a similar predicament chose to ask an attorney with experience with the process to guide them through it.
