Explosions: Officials investigate hazardous materials incident

A workplace accident can happen at any moment in Pennsylvania or elsewhere, often due to unforeseen dangers. Unfortunately, employees who work with hazardous materials are often at risk of being injured by explosions. Officials in another state are currently investigating a recent incident that injured one person and killed two others.

The incident happened one morning on a day in late May. According to reports, workers at Midland Resources were using bleach to prepare a tank for cleaning. Unfortunately, an explosion occurred that killed two people. The injured worker was transported to the hospital by helicopter; that worker is in critical condition.

A rescue worker at the scene described the explosion as the worst tank explosion that he had ever seen. The company works with equipment used by natural gas companies. While the explosion has been classified as a hazardous materials incident, it is not believed that there is a threat to the public. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting an investigation into the matter; investigators have up to six months to complete its inquiry.

Unfortunately, when explosions occur in a Pennsylvania workplace, they often cause significant harm to workers. The families of the two deceased people must now plan a funeral while the injured worker likely has a long road to recovery. The victims -- including the families of the deceased -- may be entitled to workers' compensation insurance benefits. These benefits help with the financial aftermath of a workplace accident, and an attorney with experience with the compensation process can help them sure they are treated fairly.
