Workplace accidents: Building collapse sends 2 to hospital

Workplaces in Pennsylvania and across the country often have many hidden dangers. Unfortunately, workplace accidents can result in serious harm to workers, often leaving them floundering with medical expenses in a time when they are unable to work while they recover. Two families may be experiencing such a situation after a partial building collapse sent workers to the hospital.

The accident happened one afternoon on a day in early June. According to fire officials, part of a building collapsed as a result of what has been described as an industrial accident. Officials claim they worked two hours to extricate a worker from the debris.

One employee was transported to the hospital by ambulance while the other was taken by helicopter. Many details regarding the accident, including the exact cause of the collapse and the victims' current conditions, are unclear. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has indicated that it is investigating the incident. Depending on the results of its investigation, the victims' employer could face fines, citations or both.

Unfortunately, victims of workplace accidents often have a long road to recovery, requiring extensive medical treatment. In some cases, injured workers are never able to return to work in the same capacity. Fortunately, employers in Pennsylvania are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage to help with the ramifications of medical bills and lost wages as well as provide compensation for the costs of job retraining, if necessary. An attorney with experience with the compensation process can help such victims seek the benefits to which they are entitled.
