Workplace accidents: Trooper killed in interstate crash

Most people in Pennsylvania are aware of the many work-related risks that police officers and state troopers face. Even when they are not attempting to apprehend dangerous criminals, they face the risk of workplace accidents in the form of car crashes if they spend time driving as part of their job responsibilities. Unfortunately, one community is now mourning the unexpected loss of a state trooper after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident.

The incident happened just after 3 p.m. on a day in June. According to reports, both the officer and the driver of a truck were driving in slowed traffic just before lanes merged due to road construction. For reasons that are unclear, the two collided.

The 37-year-old officer was transported to the hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His canine partner received emergency veterinarian treatment but reportedly only suffered minor injuries. The 47-year-old driver of the truck and his 38-year-old passenger declined medical treatment.

While police officers are working to piece together the events leading up to the accident, the family of the deceased man are left, unexpectedly, planning his funeral. Because of the known risk of workplace accidents, employers are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage. While these benefits will not help surviving family members cope with their grief, it can help ensure that they are able to meet their financial obligations. An attorney with experience with such benefits can help families in Pennsylvania fully understand their rights and pursue a fair settlement.
