Industrial accident involving beam results in fatality

Most people in Pennsylvania are never fully prepared for the unexpected loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, those who have family members who work in an industrial setting are sometimes confronted with such a scenario due to an industrial accident. Unfortunately, one family in another state is facing such a loss after an accident involving a beam took a man's life.

The incident happened at a recycling facility one morning on a day in September. Reports indicate that a 38-year-old man was riding on top of a beam hooked to a crane. The beam is used to pack recycling materials.

The man reportedly fell off the beam -- estimated to weigh 4,000 to 5,000 pounds -- which then fell on and rolled on top of him. He was receiving care when rescue workers arrived at the scene. Although he was transported to the hospital, he ultimately passed away as a result of injuries suffered in the incident, which remains under investigation by both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and local authorities.

Unfortunately, a family is left unexpectedly planning a funeral for their loved one. Those in Pennsylvania who lose a loved one in an industrial accident such as this are often left wondering how they will cope with both the emotional and financial consequences of their loss. Because states are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage to workers and those benefits typically extend to family members following a fatality, there may be some relief from the medical bills, lost wages and funeral expenses. An attorney who is familiar with the process can help families seek a fair settlement, allowing them to focus on their overall recovery.
