3 Ways to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents This Spring

1233sunset-summer-motorcycle.jpgSpring is finally here, and soon motorcycles will return to the roads in greater numbers. Unfortunately, springtime in Pittsburgh sees a lot of rain and wet roads due to melted snow, which can lead to an increase in motorcycle accidents. Staying safe on a motorcycle is a main priority for any rider, especially when weather is involved. As the days begin to grow warmer, it's important to refresh your memory on motorcycle safety.

Here are some tips for staying safe as you head out onto the road this spring.

Wear the Right Gear

No matter the season, all motorcyclists should worry about staying visible to other drivers on the road. During a rain or snow storm, this can be especially difficult. If a rider does not have access to brightly colored clothing or powerful lights, it may be best to wait out the storm. The most common motorcycle accidents occur when motorists are unable to see motorcyclists, like when a car is making a left-hand turn.

In addition to maintaining visibility, it's always important to wear a helmet--regardless of the weather or road conditions. The NHTSA estimates that helmets saved 1,772 motorcyclists' lives in 2015, and that 740 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets. Don't risk your life to look cool; invest in a well-fitting helmet to minimize the chance of brain injury or death that can result from a motorcycle accident.

Maintain a Safe Speed

Often times when you get on a motorcycle, you feel the need for speed. That may be okay in some cases, but not when it's raining, snowing, or the roads are just plain wet. If proper precautions are not taken, any amount of water on the road can be extremely dangerous to not only the motorcyclist but surrounding drivers as well.

To maintain sufficient traction and reduce the risk of an accident, consider keeping speeds slightly lower. You should also avoid sharp turns, which can increase the risk of hydroplaning. With these precautions, you'll reduce the distance that is generally needed to brake effectively, and your motorcycle is more likely to remain upright.

Stay Aware of the Local Weather Forecast

The weather plays a drastic role in whether or not it's safe to go out on the road. To prevent weather-related traffic accidents, motorcyclists should always consider external risks prior to setting out on the road. Be aware of current conditions outside and what the weather will be like during your trip. Keep in mind that inclement weather doesn't just make the roads slicker--it can also cause other motorists to drive less safely.
