OSHA investigates fatal workplace accident

The vast majority of employers in Pennsylvania and across the country are dedicated to protecting the safety of their workers. In fact, one company with a facility in a neighboring state reportedly starts each shift with discussing safety issues with employees and provides training that is specific to each employee's role. However, despite these efforts, accidents can still happen as demonstrated by a recent fatal workplace accident at that company.

XPO Logistics, where the accident happened, employs thousands of people in multiple countries. Despite the description of the company's commitment to overall safety as relayed by a company spokesperson, two men, a 38-year-old and a 62-year-old, were recently killed. According to reports, the men were unloading DuPont Corian, which is a material that is used to make countertops.

Unfortunately, 11 slabs -- each weighing 800 pounds -- fell on the men. Both died at the scene. The incident is currently under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which has up to six months to complete its report.

Now two families are coping with the news of the unexpected death of their loved ones as a result of the fatal workplace accident. Even when employers and employees are dedicated to safety, accidents such as these can still occur, often with devastating consequences. Because there is no way to completely prevent a workplace accident and the financial consequences can create added stress, employers in Pennsylvania and across the country are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage that can help with funeral costs, among other financial complications. An attorney with experience with such benefits can help these grieving families pursue recovery of all applicable benefits.
