Asbestos causes workplace illness

Asbestos is a naturally occurring substance that has been used in a variety of industrial applications in Pennsylvania and across the country. Steadily growing data proved some time ago that the mineral is extremely toxic to human beings, especially when inhaled. Since then, great efforts have been made to replace asbestos in all relevant applications, remove it where it has been installed and remediate areas to make them safe for human use.

The World Health Assembly, the International Labour Organization and other relevant authorities have released reports indicating that there is no safe use for asbestos and that it must be eliminated from commerce, industry and trade entirely. Diseases related to asbestos will be reduced by this method, but there is so much of the material in use already that new cases may continue to crop up in the indeterminate future.

There are initiatives underway to offer information about alternatives to asbestos use and encourage their adoption. Education is also important with regard to the proper methods to keep asbestos that is already in place from becoming unsafe and to abate its presence without hazard to occupants or workers. Additionally, there are attempts to improve diagnosis and early treatment for those who may be suffering from toxic exposure, as well as a registry of cases that could contribute to the long-term treatment.

Anyone who is experiencing an occupational disease or workplace illness may benefit from the assistance of a lawyer. A lawyer may be able to help their client assemble the medical evidence needed to prove to an employer, former employer, court or insurance company that the ailment originated in the workplace and is deserving of compensation.
