Toxic exposure in the workplace

Many workers throughout the United States are exposed to hazardous chemicals and toxins at work every day. If you are one of these workers, it is important to understand what you can do to minimize your risks. And understand, you always have a right to work in a healthy and safe environment.

If dangerous chemicals or toxins are present at your job, then your employer must disclose this information to you and your co-workers. Typically, your employer will post warnings that point out the various chemicals found in your work area along with an explanation of the risks these chemicals pose. There should also be proper safety procedures to follow if you are ever exposed to these chemicals.

If, as part of your job, you must work with these chemicals, then you are entitled to proper training and equipment to safely handle these toxins. You are likely aware of some of the ways to minimize risks in these environments such as wearing the proper safety equipment. It is also important for work areas to have good ventilation as well as protective barriers that can help limit the potential for exposure.

If you believe that you were exposed to a dangerous chemical or toxin while on the job, then you may want to consult with a workers' compensation attorney. In addition to the general rules regarding safety, your employer is bound by a higher duty because of the increased risk you face.

Unfortunately, chemical or toxic exposure could have effects that last years into your life. Sometimes there is just no way to know when or if you will ever get better. An attorney can help you prepare for that possibility by working to get you the compensation you need and by helping you plan out your financial future.
