Workplace accidents: Man killed at landfill

Most workers and their employers are committed to establishing and maintaining a safe work environment. Despite their efforts, however, workplace accidents can still happen, in Pennsylvania and other areas across the country. Unfortunately, a man in another state recently lost his life in an accident that happened at his workplace.

Reports indicate that the accident happened during the morning hours of a day in early December. The identity of the 47-year-old victim was released days after the incident. Police claim they were called to the scene just after 10 a.m.

According to reports, the man became entangled in a hydraulic arm that operates the netting on the top of the truck he was operating. Unfortunately, he died as a result of injuries suffered in the accident. Police claim that accident occurred soon after the man checked in. Fatal accidents such as this are typically the subject of investigations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. If any health or safety violations are discovered, the man's employer, Republic Services, could face fines, citations or both.

While OSHA investigates to help prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future, the family members of the deceased man are likely attempting to decide how to move on with their lives. Unfortunately, an unexpected death such as this often leaves families struggling as a result of lost wages and funeral expenses. Because of the potential ramifications of workplace accidents, employers in Pennsylvania and other states are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage. An attorney can help victims -- including surviving family members in the event of a fatality -- seek the compensation they deserve.
