Lineman victim of electrocution; investigation underway

When a storm comes through an area, some people may experience power outages. For many in Pennsylvania, this is an inconvenience. However, while some people worry about the television shows they are missing or the work they could be doing, there are workers who put their lives in danger while attempting to restore power efficiently. In fact, a recent death, believed to have been caused by electrocution, demonstrates the potential dangers these workers face.

The incident happened in another state, one evening on a day in late June. According to reports, severe thunderstorms in the area had caused power outages. A 33-year-old lineman was attempting to help restore electricity when reports indicate he was electrocuted.

First responders attempted to revive the man. Unfortunately, he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Now, investigators, potentially including representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are working to understand the cause of the accident.

While an investigation could potentially prevent a similar accident in the future, it will likely do little to relieve the grief that the man's surviving family members may be experiencing as a result of their unexpected loss. Though measures are likely in place to prevent incidents involving electrocution, many workers face this risk in the workplace. Because no job is completely without risks, employers are required to provides workers' compensation insurance coverage, which can extend to certain family members in the event of a fatality. It may be difficult for survivors in Pennsylvania to pursue a fair settlement in a time filled with grief; however, there are attorneys who can help.
