Mother receiving Supplemental Security Income faces challenges

Single parents in Pittsburgh know how difficult it can be to meet expenses from month to month. Careful planning and budgeting can help, but sometimes those efforts just aren't enough. This is exactly what one mother of six, who receives Supplemental Security Income benefits, has discovered.

The 31-year-old mother does what she can to make sure that her children, who are between the ages of eight months and 11 years, get what they need. She receives some child support from one of the children's fathers, but the other father is not as compliant. In addition, she receives SSI benefits for one of her children's speech and developmental issues.

The woman and her children live very modestly. Her kids do not have expensive toys or electronics. Yet making ends meet is very tough from time to time, especially during the holiday season. Thankfully, her children will be able to open some presents due to the generosity of local charitable organizations.

Fellow community members recognize this woman as a good mother trying to do the best for her children. The young mother hopes to achieve a long-term goal of going to nursing school. Right now, however, the needs of her children are taking priority so she can't attend classes.

As this woman's case shows, SSI benefits can help families take care of necessary expenses, but it's still tough. This is why it could be helpful to seek out knowledgeable advice. By having a full understanding of qualifications for SSI and the application process, Pennsylvania families can get the resources they need to comfortably meet their financial obligations.
