Spring is on the way, and soon motorcycles will return to the roads in greater numbers. Unfortunately, that means we'll be seeing motorcycle accidents soon as well. Whether you are a motorcyclist yourself or you just worry about sharing the road with them, being informed about  motorcycles and motorcycle accidents makes the roads safer for everyone. This is especially true in Pittsburgh, where the roads can be as unpredictable as the drivers. Here are a few facts to consider as you head out onto the road this spring.

1: The majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by automobile drivers.

In 2013, the California Department of Motor Vehicles reported that over half of all motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers violating a motorcycle's right of way. The biggest dangers are due to cars turning left or pulling out from side streets.

2: Most motorcycle accidents involve new riders.

Motorcyclists are four times more likely to have an accident in their first 30 days than they are in their entire second year of riding. In fact, about 1 in 5 motorcycle accidents occur in the rider's first month.

3: Weather and other road conditions do not matter much.

Weather plays no part in 98% of all motorcycle accidents. Road defects like potholes only cause about 2% of accidents. And animals in the roadway only contribute to 1% of motorcycle accidents.

4: Motorcyclists who wear helmets are involved in proportionally fewer accidents.

While about 50% of all motorcyclists regularly wear helmets, only 40% of those who get into accidents were wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

5: High-performance motorcycles are far more dangerous than typical motorcycles.

Supersport bikes are typically driven by riders under the age of 30, and they have a rate of fatal accidents 4 times higher than the average. Sport motorcycles are most often driven by riders under the age of 34, and they have a death rate twice the average.
